At the ‘Transparent Factory’ in Dresden (Germany) the Volkswagen Phaeton is being assembled entirely by hand. However, the supply of materials to the assembly line and transportation of the drive train are fully automated using two types of customized AGVs. In total 56 vehicles are operational in Volkswagens futuristic technology center.

To transport components from the basement to the production lines on the two upper levels, a differential drive AGV (allowing for tight turns) is used. The oval shaped production line consists of 29 slow moving ‘fish-scales’, which the AGVs drive on to. With SuperFROG coordinating where and when AGVs enter the fish-scales, an accuracy of 10mm or better is achieved.
The other customized AGV transports the drive train to the marriage process. For synchronization with the overhead cableway carrying the body, this AGV type has a diagonal wheel-configuration enabling it to crab (drive sideways). Steering wheels are located on opposite corners of the vehicle.
The Transparent Factory is a clean environment with a maple-colored parquet floor. Besides being flexible and reliable, Volkswagen also required the AGV system to fit the high profile interior. The patented FROG-grid, with magnets embedded in the floor, guaranteed optimum flexibility and reliability while invisible to the eye.
